Amys in Paris

30 Jan

Jean Paul Gaultier channels the late Amy Winehouse in the Spring/Summer 12 runway show at Paris Fashion Week. The collection saw models strut down the runway in retro looks reminiscent of Amy Winehouse. Sporting her signature beehive hair do, dramatic flicked eye liner & Monroe piercing the models walked to the instrumental of Back to Black.

The collection itself didn’t entirely look heavily influenced by Amys style but did at times take a morbid turn as models in black veils took stage. The collection, ignoring the Amy references has a few nice pieces. Amy was always seen as a ‘style icon’ with her daring and very original look but was it a good move for Gaultier?!

In an interview with The Sun newspaper Amys dad Mitch Winehouse was not too pleased with what the Paris fashion house has done saying “To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on. No one asked us for permission or offered to make a donation to the foundation.”

Mitch’s disappointment in the collection is not only down to not being consulted but also down to the portrayal of the negative side of her life “We’re proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste. It portrays a view of Amy when she was not at her best and glamorizes some of the more upsetting times in her life. That’s upsetting for her family.”

Such a shame to see what could be seen as an exploitation on the loss of a modern icon, they could’ve given something back to the family or their charity. I can see what they were attempting to do but it didn’t quite work for me. Surely this could have been done in a more tasteful way

What do you lot think?
