LFW: Tata Naka A/W12

22 Feb

Yesterday I was lucky enough to have been invited down to London Fashion Week to view the AW12 collection from Tata Naka. The ready-to-wear presentation showed the work of sisters Tamara and Natasha Surguladze who are Georgia natives.

Arriving promptly I didn’t know what to expect from the presentation and 4.30pm the doors opened. We entered a monochrome check floored room which was draped from ceiling to floor with tribal ethnic inspired prints and the models stood poised to a Motown classic. The presentation began with the models lined up in curly afros and colour blocked creepers. The AW12 collection from Tata Naka is print full and colour full. The collection showed a great combination of African Malawian inspired tribal print work and embellishing with contemporary styling and cuts. For example they took a bold yellow tribal printed pencil skirt and teamed it with a pin striped shirt buttoned to the neck and topped with a colour blocked boyfriend jacket and creepers. I absolutely loved how this collection was put together and styled. Sophisticated, contemporary and yet extremely playful.

Tata Naka speaking on their signature style “Our collections explore the unexpected; we play with the illusory but always maintain a sense of humour. One of our signatures is our in-house prints that are based on our paintings and photography. We always aim to create timeless pieces for our customers: pieces with which they will fall in love” And I couldn’t agree more. I fell in love. See more pictures from the collection here.

The presentation lay out made it feel as though you were gate crashing a photo shoot with the lighting and photography equipment in the centre and eager photographers running around and shouting directions while waving arms at the models to ‘pose like this’. However the constant flow of Pina Colada cocktails and the banging Motown soundtrack with great classics from Diana Ross to Michael Jackson it was an enjoyable Fashion Week experience.

AW12 has been my first introduction to the Surguladze sisters work and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. I now have a whole load of items added to my wardrobe wishlist from the ladies! I have never been a fan of creepers but the footwear featured in their collection could make me a convert! (The crystal studded ones were my fave.)

In conclusion the A/W12 collection from Tata Naka was a hit, these pieces will provide you with that much needed cheer in our typical British Autumn/Winter chill. 2012 holds a lot of exciting projects for Tata Naka so keep your eyes peeled for the launch of their online store, a new jersey line and more!

Amys in Paris

30 Jan

Jean Paul Gaultier channels the late Amy Winehouse in the Spring/Summer 12 runway show at Paris Fashion Week. The collection saw models strut down the runway in retro looks reminiscent of Amy Winehouse. Sporting her signature beehive hair do, dramatic flicked eye liner & Monroe piercing the models walked to the instrumental of Back to Black.

The collection itself didn’t entirely look heavily influenced by Amys style but did at times take a morbid turn as models in black veils took stage. The collection, ignoring the Amy references has a few nice pieces. Amy was always seen as a ‘style icon’ with her daring and very original look but was it a good move for Gaultier?!

In an interview with The Sun newspaper Amys dad Mitch Winehouse was not too pleased with what the Paris fashion house has done saying “To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on. No one asked us for permission or offered to make a donation to the foundation.”

Mitch’s disappointment in the collection is not only down to not being consulted but also down to the portrayal of the negative side of her life “We’re proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste. It portrays a view of Amy when she was not at her best and glamorizes some of the more upsetting times in her life. That’s upsetting for her family.”

Such a shame to see what could be seen as an exploitation on the loss of a modern icon, they could’ve given something back to the family or their charity. I can see what they were attempting to do but it didn’t quite work for me. Surely this could have been done in a more tasteful way Gaultier..no?

What do you lot think?

Roberto Cavalli S/S12

11 Jan

Roberto Cavalli has pulled out all the stops for his latest SS12 campaign shoot. Long limbed and haired Naomi Campbell, Daphne Groeneveld, Kristen McMenamy & Karen Elson do a great job in what is a dazzling collection of print, texture and form.

Versace x H&M..Round TWO!

17 Dec

If you missed out on getting a piece of the Versace x H&M collection last month Donatella has kindly given us another chance at owning a designer high street mash up. Versace will be back with H&M mid January 2012 with their cruise line which will only be available online in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands & the UK.

The collection will again offer male & female lines for the Spring/Summer season. The prints for the womens collection have been cut down to just one (but quirky fruit salad line up) and makes use of light block colours other wise, giving it a cleaner and fresh look. The menswear shows a more sophisticated feel, which I think reflects the collaboration of both brands very well. I think this will be another winning team effort.
